Recertify your welding Skills for the Rail Industry

This recertification course is designed for experienced rail workers who need to renew their competency in the aluminothermic welding process. Participants will refresh their practical skills and technical knowledge to safely and effectively complete rail welding tasks using industry-standard methods and equipment.

The course focuses on validating competency in the aluminothermic welding process while reinforcing compliance with current national safety requirements, work instructions, and rail operator standards.

Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:

TLIW0006 Heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry
TLIW0004 Grind rails
TLIW3015 Weld rail using aluminothermic welding process

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however in alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:

A valid Category 3 or 1 Rail Medical assessment

To ensure you are fully prepared and able to participate in your recertification session, please bring the following items with you:

Rail Industry Worker (RIW) Card
Evidence of the completion of 10 Welds (Weld Returns)

Note: A weld must be carried out in front on your Trainer and Assessor for each Aluminothermic Welding Process you are needing recertified.

Assessment Information

Prepare and plan welding method
Carry out welding process
Perform grinding tasks to finish or prepare rails for joining and maintenance
Set up and operate oxy-LPG equipment safely to heat and cut rail materials
Identify hazards associated with heat and welding operations and apply control measures
Read and interpret technical documentation, weld procedures, and work plans
Carry out post-weld inspections and quality assurance processes
