Welding Skills for the Rail Industry

This course provides participants with the practical skills and technical knowledge required to perform rail welding and cutting tasks in the rail corridor, using industry-standard methods and equipment. The focus is on the safe and effective use of oxy-LPG cutting equipment, rail grinding tools, and the aluminothermic welding process used to join rail sections.

Participants will learn to perform these tasks in compliance with national safety regulations, work instructions, and rail operator standards.

Participants will learn to:

  • Grind rails to achieve precise surface profiles 
  • Heat and cut materials safely using oxy-LPG equipment in a rail environment 
  • Weld rail using the aluminothermic process to restore rail integrity and ensure smooth, safe track operation

Certification

Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:

Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment:

TLIW0006Heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry
TLIW0004 Grind rails
TLIW3015 Weld rail using aluminothermic welding process

In addition to the listed units of competency, you will also receive a Certificate of Achievement for the specific aluminothermic welding process completed during training, for example Railtech PLK-CJ or Thermit – SkV – Elite.

There are no formal entry requirements, however in alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:
  • A valid Category 3 or 1 Rail Medical assessment

This course begins with five days of trainer-led classroom learning, where you will develop the knowledge and skills required to safely perform the roles requirements. During the classroom component, you will complete knowledge assessments to demonstrate your understanding.
 
Following the classroom training, you will be required to complete an in-field logbook in your workplace with the completion of twenty (20) welds. This practical experience must be organised by you and completed under the supervision of a qualified workplace mentor, who will verify your competency in performing the required tasks.
 
Once your logbook has been completed, you will return to TICRail to undertake a final practical assessment, where one of our qualified assessors will observe your skills and confirm your competency against the requirements of the unit.

Please note that the final practical assessment is booked separately and attracts an additional assessment fee.
