Recertify your welding Skills for the Rail Industry

This recertification course is designed for experienced rail workers who need to renew their competency in the aluminothermic welding process. Participants will refresh their practical skills and technical knowledge to safely and effectively complete rail welding tasks using industry-standard methods and equipment.

The course focuses on validating competency in the aluminothermic welding process while reinforcing compliance with current national safety requirements, work instructions, and rail operator standards.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all required assessments, students will be issued a:

Certificate of Achievement 

Weld rail using aluminothermic process
Grind rails
Head and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry

In addition to the listed units of competency, you will also receive a Certificate of Achievement for the specific aluminothermic welding process completed during training, for example Railtech PLK-CJ or Thermit – SkV – Elite.

There are no formal entry requirements, however in alignment with industry consultation and the job role expectations, the following is needed for course admission:
  • A valid Category 3 or 1 Rail Medical assessment
  • CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry 
  • TLIF0020 Safely Access the Rail Corridor 
  • TLIB0012 Maintain and Use Hand Tools 
  • TLID0020 Shift Materials Safely using Manual Handling Methods 
  • TLIE1003 Participate in Basic Workplace Communications 
  • TLIF0025 Follow Work Health and Safety Procedures 
  • TLIF2010 Apply Fatigue Management Strategies 
  • TLIB2085 Apply Track Fundamentals
  • TLIU2008 Apply Environmental Procedures to Rail Infrastructure 
  • TLIS2044 Carry Out Rail Installation 
  • TLIS2034 Install and Repair Rail Fastening Systems
  • TLIW0004 Grind rails
  • TLIW0006 Heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry
  • TLIW3015 Weld rail using aluminothermic welding process
To ensure you are fully prepared and able to participate in your recertification session, please bring the following items with you:
  • Rail Industry Worker (RIW) Card
  • Evidence of the completion of 10 Welds (Weld Returns)
Note: A weld must be carried out in front on your Trainer and Assessor for each Aluminothermic Welding Process you are needing recertified.

This recertification includes knowledge assessments, review of supplementary evidence and practical observations demonstrating skills in a controlled environment to evaluate both theoretical understanding and hands-on competence.

  • Supplementary Evidence Review: Assessment of relevant workplace documents, records, or prior evidence to confirm continued competence and currency.
  • Practical observation assessments: Hands-on activities where participants demonstrate their skills in a controlled environment.
